Migration of Population
Upon arrival in the United States, many Vietnamese refugees are relocated to Central New York, the majority of whom tend to settle in East Utica. Right now, there are approximately 900 Vietnamese living in Utica (interview with Tom Doan). The community there remains united and tied to their culture by organizing different events throughout the year, most notably the celebration for Tet, the Vietnamese New Year. The climate in central New York is considerably different from that of the tropical climate in Vietnam, which causes many Vietnamese to stay in Utica only for a couple of years before moving to a climate more similar to that of their homeland, such as California or Florida.
A large majority of Vietnamese refugees in the U.S. have settled in California, particularly in the areas around San Francisco and the Silicon Valley. The Vietnamese communities in these areas are particularly active, with their own businesses, stores, markets and newspapers (Bass, 164).
