Using Interpreters
The interpreter checklist is a set of questions health care providers should consider when using an interpreter.
Be aware that an appointment using an interpreter may be longer than normal?
Have you thought about the gender, ethnicity or dialect of the interpreter, because certain combinations may be inappropriate and inefficient to the best healthcare.
It may be beneficial to meet with the interpreter prior to the appointment.
Avoid long and complex sentences, as well as slang or sarcasm, so the messages may be translated accurately.
Be aware of any nonverbal communication, which may indicate the patient's sensitivity to a topic.
Be sure to look at the patient, despite the interpreter, and speak in the first person.
