In 2003, St. Elizabeth Medical Center was honored to be the approved national site to teach Advanced Gynecological surgeries under the directorship of Dr. Prabhat K. Ahluwalia, a nationally renowned expert in minimally invasive surgeries. This accredited, two-year program offers Board-Certified OB/ GYN specialists to further their surgical knowledge and skills. This fellowship was one of only 13 such sites approved by the American Association of GYN laparoscopists. Currently, there are 25 such programs nationwide.
Selected fellows acquire basic and advanced gynecologic endoscopic surgical procedures that optimize successful surgical outcomes. The fellow will apply knowledge and skills to enhance outcome and minimize surgical trauma, pain, recuperation and complications. In addition, fellows learn techniques that allow them to further aspects of endoscopic surgery, especially for those gynecological conditions still treated by traditional open procedures.
Training exposure includes operating room, office practice, laboratory, research, publication and instruction. The focus of this fellowship is surgical experience and clinical research. Participation in an office setting will allow the fellow to examine patients, establish a working diagnosis and offer appropriate testing. The fellow will offer counseling and risk assessments for treatment, plan a treatment, and specify options. These actions are guided under direct supervision.
The goal of this program is to train fellows with optimum exposure to endoscopic surgeries so they are proficient in all aspects of gynecological endoscopic surgeries. Graduating fellows will bring sensible, safe and effective care to their communities and educate other physicians.
