St. Elizabeth Trauma Center Gives Life-Saving Awards The Trauma Center at St. Elizabeth Medical Center has awarded its annual Life-Saving Awards to two organizations for their roles in pre-hospital care to a young boy who was struck by a bus. The awards were announced May 4 at the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Banquet at Twin Ponds. The young victim and his family were at the banquet to present the awards along with Filomain Talerico, RN, BS, MS, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.
The young boy was struck by a bus while riding his bike and sustained life-threatening injuries. "The quick action and excellent care by the pre-hospital care providers helped to save his life," said John DeTraglia, M.D., Trauma Center Medical Director.
"This is a good illustration of trauma system teamwork," Mrs. Talerico noted.
Those receiving the awards included:
New York Mills Fire Department
Kunkel Ambulance
Additionally, another St. Elizabeth Medical Center employee, Richard Dodge, RN of Utica, received the EMS RN of Excellence Award. He was also the nurse that took care of the young boy from the bus accident.
Dodge is a graduate of the St. Elizabeth College of Nursing and has worked in the Emergency Department for two years. Prior to his current position at the Medical Center, he worked as an ED Technician and First Responder for Kunkel Ambulance. His qualities in earning this award are: he is very professional and efficient, and is respected by his peers. His nursing assessment skills are excellent and he is an asset to EMS personnel in accompanying them on patient transfers to other facilities.
"We very much appreciate the daily efforts of those who provide Emergency Medical Services in our community," said St. Elizabeth President/CEO Sister M. Johanna DeLelys. "During National EMS Week, May 20 – 26, we want to express our thanks for all that these vital workers do for patient care."
