Hospitalist Service

St. Elizabeth Medical Center Hospitalists provides
inpatients with on-site, 24 hour care.

What is a Hospitalist?

A Hospitalist is a physician who specializes in the care of hospitalized patients. Most Hospitalists are trained in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine and spend all or most of their time caring for hospitalized patients.

How does the Hospitalist Service Work?

One of our Hospitalists will be assigned to function as your primary medical physician during your stay. Because of the Hospitalists’ work schedule, some of your care will be provided by other members of the team. The Hospitalist will perform a medical history and physical exam at the time of admission, visit you on a regular basis, order any necessary tests and treatments, coordinate your care with other physicians and staff, and communicate with your Primary Care Physician.

What are the benefits of a Hospitalist?

Availability
Most Primary Care Physicians are only in the hospital for an hour or two a day. One of the Hospitalists will be available in the hospital 7 days a week. As a result, the Hospitalist is available to respond to emergencies, meet with other physicians and staff, speak with your family, review test results promptly.

Focus
When Hospitalists are on duty, their hospital patients are their only responsibility. They are not seeing patients in the office, in nursing homes or other hospitals. Their focus is entirely on you.

Experience
As with any medical specialty, the more experience a physician has in a particular field, the more skilled he or she becomes. Since Hospitalists spend so much time taking care of hospital patients, they are very good at it.

Efficiency
Studies have shown that Hospitalist Services have improved medical outcomes, reduced the length of hospital stays and lowered the costs of hospital care, compared to traditional care.
