Heart disease is the number one killer of women in America. Makeover My Heart is a heart healthy day for women designed to raise awareness about the effects of heart disease among women. The event provides information and education to the women of our community about the symptoms, diagnosis, treatments and prevention of heart disease.
“Each year we host a sell-out event that welcomes more than 300 women for a full day of education and fun,” said Lisa Ennis, FNP, founder and executive director of Makeover My Heart. “From lectures and interactive clinics, to the health and wellness fair, Makeover My Heart offers a uniquely innovative learning experience that is both educational and enjoyable.”
The 2013 keynote speaker is Martha Gulati, MD, MS, FACC, FAHA, director of Preventive Cardiology and Women’s Cardiovascular Health at Ohio State University. Dr. Gulati has a specific interest in female fitness and disease prevention. She is the principal investigator of the St. James Women Take Heart Project which examines cardiac risk factors in women. Her dedication to the study of women and cardiac diseases has won her various awards and distinctions, including being named in Crain's Chicago Business "Top 40 Under 40." The award honors 40 exceptional individuals that have impacted their respective industries before the age of 40.
Dr. Gulati earned her medical degree at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada, and completed her internship, residency and cardiology fellowship at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. She received a Master in Science at the University of Chicago and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. She is board certified in cardiovascular disease.
“Like a favorite pair of shoes, women need to take good care of our hearts and there are simple things we can do that can help us live longer, healthier lives,” said Dr. Gulati. “My presentation will highlight strategies and easy ways for women to reduce salt, eat better in general and exercise more. I’ll also address how critical it is for every woman to know her numbers (blood pressure, cholesterol, waist circumference and body mass index) and to discuss them with her doctor.”
The Mohawk Valley Heart Institute (MVHI) is the major sponsor and organizer of this year’s Makeover My Heart.
