St. Elizabeth Medical Center Plans Mass In Celebration Of Canonization Of Saint Marianne Cope

St. Elizabeth Medical Center is planning a special Mass in celebration of the canonization of Saint Marianne Cope, which will take place on that day in Rome, Italy. The Mass will be held on Sunday, October 21 at 12 noon in the Medical Center Chapel on the first floor. All are welcome to attend.

Pope Benedict XVI will officially proclaim Mother Marianne Cope a Saint in the Catholic Church. Mother Marianne was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis and known for her work among the people suffering from Hansen’s disease (leprosy) in Molokai, Hawaii.

Mother Marianne Cope was born Barbara Koob, in 1838 in Germany. She emigrated with her parents and settled in West Utica. Mother Marianne was the oldest of 10 children in her family. Her father became very ill and Barbara went to work in a mill factory to help support her family. During that time, she and her family were parishioners at St. Joseph Church in West Utica (now St. Joseph-St. Patrick).

Mother Marianne Cope, a Sister of St. Francis, entered religious life in 1862 in Syracuse, N.Y. For a period of time, she ministered as teacher and principal in several schools in New York State. She was instrumental in the establishment of two of the first hospitals in the Central New York area, St. Elizabeth Hospital in Utica (1866) and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse (1869). These two hospitals were among the first 50 general hospitals in the entire U.S.

In 1883, Mother Marianne was the only one of 50 religious leaders to respond positively to an emissary from Hawaii with a request for Catholic sisters to provide healthcare on the Hawaiian Islands, especially to patients with Hansen’s disease (leprosy). For more than 30 years, Mother Marianne ministered to these patients at Kalaupapa, Molokai, Hawaii and promised her sisters that none of them would ever contract the disease. To this day, no sister has. Her compassionate care has earned her the affectionate title of “beloved mother of outcasts.”

Many of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities, along with lay people from Utica, Hawaii and beyond, will be traveling to Rome for the canonization ceremony.

The Medical Center has recently installed a large banner on the outside of the building, as well as driveway banners and posters, to commemorate Mother Marianne and her impact in the establishment of the hospital.

Kateri Tekakwitha, a native American Indian, will be canonized at the same time. Kateri Tekakwitha was known as the Lily of the Mohawks and was born in Auriesville, New York.

St. Elizabeth Medical Center Holds Point Of Dispensing (POD) Mass Vaccination Clinic

St. Elizabeth Medical Center conducted a Point of Dispensing (POD) Mass Vaccination Clinic Thursday, October 4 to prepare for a potential disaster such as pandemic flu.

The Medical Center is required by the New York State Department of Health to perform trainings on various emergency topics. Simultaneously, the staff used this clinic as an opportunity to vaccinate employees, volunteers, medical staff, area first responders, police and fire departments with the seasonal flu vaccine. Over 560 people were vaccinated during drill.

St. Elizabeth Medical Center has developed a Pandemic Influenza Plan using current information published by the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the New York State Department of Health. The plan outlines methods of responding to various levels of threat posed by pandemic influenza, with an approach to stepping up prevention and control activities as the threat increases.

A pandemic outbreak involves a disease occurrence across the globe caused by a new virus. Because the virus is new, few or no people would be immune. Key issues include infection control, occupational health, standards of care, and scope of practice.

St. Elizabeth Medical Center Using Video Remote Interpretation System For Hearing Impaired

Accessing healthcare can be challenging for patients, and even more so for those who do not speak the language or are hearing impaired. The St. Elizabeth Medical Center Language Assistance Program has begun using Video Remote Interpretation (VRI) for its patients. This is the latest in healthcare communication technology. It is revolutionizing the ways in which healthcare professionals deliver language services. The VRI system uses internet, videoconferencing and equipment to provide interpretation services.

Patients may now be provided with a trained medical interpreter by a click of the mouse, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This system is especially useful for patients with hearing impairments. Currently, the community is in short supply of qualified sign language interpreters, especially for emergency situations that demand an interpreter at a moments notice. Hearing impaired patients will no longer need to wait to have their healthcare needs met until an interpreter arrives, sometimes hours later.

This system is currently online at the Sister Rose Vincent Family Medicine Center (FMC) and at the main hospital facility’s Emergency Department. Additionally, the system will be available at the Women’s Health Center and the Children’s Health Center building in Utica. VRI will be available on rotation at other Medical Group offices when needed for patient care.

St. Elizabeth Medical Center Limits Visitors

St. Elizabeth Medical Center is experiencing an increase in patients in both the Emergency Department and the inpatient setting with flu and flu-like symptoms. Effective immediately, the organization is restricting visitors to adults 18 years of age and older. The restrictions will be in place until further notice.

In addition, any visitor or employee who is feeling ill with any type of upper respiratory problem should not enter the facility to visit or to work, in order to keep our patients and coworkers safe.

"We at the Medical Center have an obligation to protect our patients to the best of our ability. We currently have instituted visitor restrictions in the hope of controlling the spread of the virus during the patient’s hospitalization. We are also very focused on the well-being of our employees and are enforcing protective measures to keep them virus free, if possible," said Heidi Coluzza, RN, BS, BC, Director of Infection Prevention.

St. Elizabeth Resident Physicians and Mr. Slimy Teach Students About Proper Hand Washing.

Who is Mr. Slimy? If your child was in school on November 27th and 28th, they had an opportunity to meet him.

St. Elizabeth Family Medicine Residency Program’s resident physicians, Dr. Rensie DeVera, Dr. Wil-liam Gaetano, and Dr. Vijay Vanumu, went to each classroom at Kernan Elementary School to discuss proper hand washing techniques.

Mr. Slimy, the toy germ, was passed around the classroom for each student to touch. Drs. Gaetano and Vanumu then had each child look at their hands under UV light to see how Mr. Slimy con-taminated their hands.

“Mr. Slimy was covered with Glitterbug powder. When each student touched it, the powder transferred to the child’s hand. The child was then able to see the Glitterbug powder on their hands under the UV light” stated Dr. Gaetano. “This demonstrates how germs travel.” After the students saw how contaminated their hands were, they used hand sanitizer to disinfect their hands.

The students were also taught the proper way to wash their hands, how frequently they should wash their hands and the appropriate duration for effective hand washing.

It is designed to meet the needs of the adult learner who is unable to attend class during the weekday hours.

Visitor Restrictions Remain In Effect At St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare And Rome Memorial Hospital - Adults 18 Years And Older Only

St. Elizabeth Medical Center (SEMC), Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare (FSLH), and Rome Memorial Hospital (RMH) are continuing to restrict visitors to adults 18 years of age and older. The restrictions will be in place until further notice.

The organizations continue to experience an increase in patients experiencing the flu and flu-like symptoms in both their Emergency Departments and inpatient settings. Since influenza season began, Oneida County has seen 1,542 cases and the influenza activity level throughout New York State has been categorized as widespread. During the week of December 23, 2012, laboratory-confirmed influenza was reported in 56 counties plus New York City. There were a total of 4,348 reports in New York State, which is a nine percent increase over last week.

The additional visitor restrictions on the Maternity and Pediatric Units also remain in effect, as these patients are at greater risk of complications due to the flu. Only parents, grandparents and birthing coaches may visit maternity and pediatric patients at this time.

We ask that if you are coming to visit a patient and feel ill with any type of upper respiratory problem that you stay at home and delay your visit to keep yourself and our patients and residents safe.

The best protection against contracting influenza includes:
• Frequent and thorough hand washing.
• Covering all coughs and sneezes. If you don’t have a handkerchief or a tissue, use the crook of your arm, not your hand.
• Staying home from work, school or social events if you have a fever, cough, sore throat, body aches and pains, or other symptoms like nausea or vomiting sometimes associated with influenza.
• Avoiding people exhibiting symptoms of a flu-like illness.

If you have flu-like symptoms and they are severe and persistent you should contact your healthcare provider. Hospital officials advise against overloading Emergency Departments, Urgent Care facilities and primary care providers’ offices at the first sign of a cold.

The three organizations also practice “respiratory etiquette” throughout their medical facilities. Disposable masks are available for patients to wear to cover their cough, as well as tissues and hand sanitizer for good hand hygiene. If you are coming to seek treatment and have any flu-like symptoms with upper respiratory problems, you will be asked to wear a mask and may be isolated from other patients.

MVCC, St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare Partner To Provide Radiologic Technology Education

Starting with the fall 2013 semester, Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) will enter into a partnership with Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare (FSLH) to meet the region’s radiology education needs. St. Elizabeth Medical Center (SEMC) will join the partnership in the fall of 2014. This will result in an expanded allied health offering at MVCC, producing up to 24 trained radiology technologists annually to work in area healthcare facilities throughout the region.

The partnership between the hospitals and MVCC is in response to changing American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) mandates, which require entry level practitioners to hold an associate degree starting in 2015. The MVCC program totals 64 college-level credit hours in both general arts and sciences and topics specific to radiography, such as Anatomy and Physiology and Radiation Protection and Exposure. MVCC will provide the classroom instruction and will operate the training facilities at both hospitals.

Graduates of the program will hold MVCC associate of science degrees with credits transferable to four-year institutions. To earn radiology diplomas and ARRT’s professional certification, graduates will additionally complete 3,000 hours of practical instruction in New York State-certified training laboratories at SEMC and FSLH.

“All three partners share a tradition of excellence in allied health education, and we all have a track record of adapting to community needs,” said MVCC President Randall J. VanWagoner, Ph.D. “Graduates will be ready to help local healthcare providers meet their imaging needs.”

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our students, organizations and the community,” noted Scott H. Perra, FACHE, president and CEO of Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare. “Our program, which began in 1952, has a rich history of providing well-trained radiographers. Now, with MVCC, the students will enjoy the added benefit of an associate of science degree. Our relationship is another strong example of what we can do for our area when we collaborate and work together.”

“We are pleased to participate with MVCC and Faxton St. Luke’s in this important effort to ensure that radiologic technology students in our area are prepared to meet the new licensure requirements and are well trained to successfully join the workforce in the future,” said Richard Ketcham, FACHE, president and CEO of St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

The St. Elizabeth laboratory and learning center features Picture Archiving Communication Systems (PACS), Digital and Computerized Radiography, and SMART technology to enhance laboratory and classroom teaching. Historically, students trained in the lab have scored above state and national means on licensing exams, and have found employment in the field at rates of 80 percent or better. Students at FSLH and SEMC spend time observing Interventional Radiography, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Mammography, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy, Ultrasound and Echocardiography to help them prepare for continued education in the various fields of radiology. The FSLH program was recognized with national reaccreditation in 2010, while St. Elizabeth received an 8-year reaccreditation in 2005.

Once the transition is completed and all current students have passed through into MVCC, FSLH and SEMC will discontinue their radiology education programs. Currently enrolled FSLH students will have the opportunity to transfer into the MVCC program. Current SEMC students will finish their educational requirements at St. Elizabeth. The transition will occur with FSLH in the fall of 2013 and SEMC in the fall of 2014. MVCC will be advertising for full-time and part-time program staff in the next few weeks to be ready for the fall semester. FSLH has three instructors for its current program who will have the opportunity to apply for teaching positions with MVCC. SEMC has four instructors.

“This partnership will ease students’ path from college to career,” said MVCC Dean of Life and Health Sciences Terry Schwaner. “They will be able to leverage MVCC’s instructional resources and our partners’ facilities, doing all the required work in the classroom and clinical settings without having to transfer between institutions.”

MVCC is currently accepting applicants for the fall 2013 semester, and both hospitals are in the process of notifying current and prospective students of the transition. Students will be required to meet prerequisites, placement testing, and other requirements established by the college.

For more information, call MVCC Admissions at (315) 792-5354.

St. Elizabeth College Of Nursing To Hold Open House

St. Elizabeth College of Nursing (SECON) will hold an Open House on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at 6 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room at the College.

The College offers a two-year associate in applied science (AAS) degree in nursing, fully integrated theoretical learning with clinical experience within a caring environment. The nursing courses include patient care that is planned and supervised by a faculty member with expertise in a particular nursing area.
Visitor Restrictions Lifted At St. Elizabeth Medical Center

St. Elizabeth Medical Center (SEMC) and Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare (FSLH) have lifted restrictions on visitors under 18 years of age based on a decline in the number of cases of flu-like illness among area patients. The additional visitor restrictions on the Maternity and Pediatric Units have also been lifted.

While the restrictions have been lifted, the hospitals ask that if you are coming to visit a patient and feel ill with any type of upper respiratory problem that you stay at home and delay your visit to keep yourself and our patients and residents safe.

Hamilton College Students Shadow St. E's Physicians

Five Hamilton College students interested in health careers recently spent a week shadowing physicians in the St. Elizabeth Family Medicine Residency Program. This is the eighth consecutive year for the program entitled, “A Week in the Life of a Family Medicine Resident.” Students participating were Tiffany Andrade, Emma Geduldig, Robert Hawkins, Megan Lander and Akritee Shrestha.

The students’ days began at 7 a.m. with a morning meeting, during which residents and medical students watched presentations on a variety of medical conditions and case studies. From 8 a.m. until late afternoon, they shadowed residents in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery, OB/GYN, and Pediatrics at St. Elizabeth and Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare, or one of several satellite offices nearby.

“It was hectic getting into the routine, but this has been a very positive experience,” said Robert Hawkins, a senior student. “The week has given me insight into the job rather than textbook work. I saw one child with a fever at the Children’s Health Center and understand there are different protocols for different age groups.”

“The students are very enthusiatic,” said Molly Schug, D.O., a third-year resident and one of two Chief Residents. “Residency involves long hours with patients of all ages. This has been a positive experience for the Family Medicine Residents, as well.”

“I was able to see a delivery on my first day,” said Akritee Shrestha, a pre-med student. “The experience gives you a way to test the waters and interact with different patients.”

Residency is a critical, three-to-seven-year period (depending on the specialty) of medical education during which recent medical school graduates begin to officially practice medicine on their own.

Its main base of operation is in Canandaigua, NY, which serves the Greater Rochester Area and points east, west and south. In addition, the organization has a base in Marcellus, NY, which serves the Greater Syracuse Area and points east, north and south.

“Our decision to expand our bases of operation was made after careful consideration. While Mercy Flight Central has always served this region, in the event of an emergency we could be flying more than 50 miles to an accident scene. As a result, too many critically injured patients travel by ambulance to the nearest trauma center. This time delay can negatively impact the golden hour, which is critical for first responders in saving lives,” added Neil Snedeker, President and Chief Executive Officer.

“We are pleased to welcome Mercy Flight Central’s new base of operations to our area,” added Richard Ketcham, President and Chief Executive Officer, St. Elizabeth Medical Center. “Mercy Flight Central’s arrival fills a serious void in emergency air medical rescue service in our area. This a true benefit for our community.”

The mid-state region of New York includes the cities of Rome and Utica plus many smaller communities from just north of Binghamton, east to Albany and points north. Patients will benefit from reduced response time and improved outcomes as Mercy Flight Central’s air medical services include trauma management, critical care medicine and advanced airway procedures. Mercy Flight Central’s air medical personnel are trained in all aspects of critical care for inter-facility and on-scene transports.

Mercy Flight Central expects to add approximately twelve new jobs over the coming year, including flight nurses, paramedics and pilots.

The organization’s critical care teams consist of highly skilled pilots, registered nurses, paramedics and volunteer physicians.
Advanced Wound Care of St. Elizabeth Medical Center Holds Open House For Healthcare Providers

Advanced Wound Care of St. Elizabeth Medical Center held an Open House for healthcare providers on Thursday, February 7. Advanced Wound Care is located in the St. Elizabeth Medical Arts building at 4401 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford. Advanced Wound Care of St. Elizabeth Medical Center is the area’s only provider of comprehensive wound care and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. It’s specialty-trained, wound care physicians and specialists at the center offer advanced healing therapies. This service is a collaboration of St. Elizabeth Medical Center and Healogics.

Other treatment therapies of wound care include: Bio-skin substitutes, growth-stimulating wound dressings and off-loading contact casts. These methods may be used for wounds that do not heal by themselves over a period of time.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a simple and effective treatment in which a patient breathes pure oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. The therapy quickly delivers high concentrations of oxygen through the bloodstream, which helps increase the body’s own natural wound-healing abilities.

The chamber has clear sides through which patients can see their surroundings, and is equipped with TV and videos. For most people, cuts and scratches heal within days or weeks. But for those whose natural healing process is hampered, a simple sore can become a complex medical problem.

Approximately 18.5 million Americans have diabetes and, of that population, about 1.8 million will suffer from a problem wound. Since Advanced Wound Care open in 2010, nearly 7,000 patients have been treated.

National Healing Corporation and Diversified Clinical Services, Inc. have joined together to form Healogics, which is the largest provider of wound care and related disease management in the country.

Meet The Pillow Ladies

The “Pillow Ladies” are a dedicated group of volunteers who meet at St. Elizabeth Medical Center each month to craft heart-shaped pillows. The pillows are used by patients of the Mohawk Valley Heart Institute who have undergone major heart surgery.

While recovering, patients hold a heart pillow close to their chest, providing necessary support to their sternum or breastbone. This can be especially helpful during coughing and breathing exercises, which help prevent fluid from building in the lungs.

It is quite a sight to see as the mismatched pieces of fabric and a variety of materials take shape. Each pillow is made by hand with care and precision. Each is unique in design and color, yet all provide the same symbol of hope and support for those who need them.

The women behind these pillows seem to be aware of their importance and take pride in every one made. Many have been members for several years, some since the very beginning, over 15 years ago. There is a sense of camaraderie among the group, whose members have come to know one another well over the years. Talk of children and grandchildren can be heard as their hands work steadily, cutting, stuffing, sewing one pillow after another. Before they know it, between 25 and 40 pillows are made.

If you would to help the Pillow Ladies, please call our Volunteer Department at 315-798-8275. Also, donations of fabric and sewing materials are always needed and can be brought to the main reception desk in the College of Nursing building at 2215 Genesee St., Utica, NY 13501.

Cancer Prevention Study

Public Invited to Participate in Cancer Prevention Study.

We all want to know we have made a difference in the life of another. This year, our community has a unique opportunity to make an impact on the lives of many.

The third Cancer Prevention Study of the American Cancer Society will be enrolling participants at St. Elizabeth Medical Center on Thursday, May 2 from 3-7 p.m. in the hospital’s Sister Rose Vincent, Sister Johanna and Sister Regina Conference Rooms. As part of enrollment, individuals who choose to participate will simply fill out a comprehensive survey packet about health history, provide a small blood sample (to be collected by trained phlebotomists) and provide a waist measure. Enrollment will take approximately 20-30 minutes at your local event. From that point forward, study participants will be followed over time to update information via periodic, mailed surveys. Your involvement in CPS-3 will help American Cancer Society researchers understand the causes of, and ultimately determine ways to prevent, cancer.

If you are willing to make a long-term commitment to the study (which involves completing follow-up surveys periodically over the next 20-30 years), are between the ages of 30 and 65 years old and have never been diagnosed with cancer, then you will want to participate in this study.

If you don’t meet the eligibility requirements, your significant participation comes from telling everyone you know about the opportunity to help prevent cancer.

Visit www.mohawkvalleycps3.org, call 1-888-604-5888 or e-mail cps3@cancer.org to learn more about the difference you can personally make in the fight against cancer. Research Today for a Cancer-Free Tomorrow!

Update On Affiliation Between St. Elizabeth Medical Center And Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare

In December 2012 the Boards of Directors for St. Elizabeth Medical Center (SEMC) and Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare (FSLH) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to affiliate the two organizations. Since that time the hospitals have been working through the next steps of legal and financial due diligence.

The boards have agreed on the name of the proposed ‘parent organization’ that would govern the two facilities - Mohawk Valley Health System.

The MOU states that the proposed parent organization would be governed by a new Board of Directors comprised of 18 members with equal members from the SEMC board and the FSLH board.

The board work group anticipates that, barring any significant issues, the organizations will be ready to submit a Certificate of Need (CON) application to the New York State Department of Health by the end of summer. Even with the CON submission additional steps will need to occur including satisfactory review by the Federal Trade Commission.

Our Nurses Join Forces as The Flu Fighters to Promote Handwashing - View the Music Video

St. Elizabeth Medical Center, in collaboration with the University of Toronto, is participating in a unique patient safety initiative called "Bordering on Zero". The program empowers our front line staff by letting them identify a goal and work together on planning and implementing their own strategies to reach the target.

Our Medical Surgical Unit on 3A was chosen to lead this effort and they chose to decrease the rate of Hospital Acquired Infections. One strategy the staff decided to focus on was improving our Hand Hygiene compliance rate. Nurses came together and decided to produce a music video to encourage handwashing and soon our hallways were taken over by three germ-fighting country girls known as the Flu Fighters.

Participation became contagious and soon staff from administration to dietary, respiratory and more began making cameo appearances to help emphasize that we should all “Wash Yo Hands”.

Our goal is to see our Hand Hygiene compliance rates increase hospital wide. Rates are monitored throughout the Medical Center by our Infection Prevention Department and results are conveyed back to nurses of each unit on a monthly basis. This video was a huge success in bringing our staff together while encouraging proper hand hygiene and helping reduce Hospital Acquired Infections. We are very proud of our staff for the dedication and hard work they put into this project.

We encourage you to view the videos and share them with friends and colleagues to help reduce the spread of germs and the flu through proper handwashing.
