St. Elizabeth Medical Center And Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare Connect To HealtheConnections

St. Elizabeth Medical Center and Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare are now connected to a health information exchange that allows authorized, participating healthcare providers to securely access patients’ consolidated medical histories for better care.

HealtheConnections is the Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) of Central New York and is one of 12 RHIOs in New York state. HealtheConnections provides authorized healthcare professionals with secure access to patient medical records in real time to deliver more comprehensive, efficient and cost-effective care. HealtheConnections also governs the online exchange of medical information and provides security protections with a sophisticated, encrypted system. Only authorized medical personnel can access the online health information exchange. Patients benefit from fewer duplicate tests and procedures, faster second opinions, a reduced risk of errors caused by illegible handwriting or incomplete records, and more informed care during office visits and emergencies.

The information available in HealtheConnections comes from the electronic medical records of participating healthcare providers, including hospitals, laboratories, physician practices, and radiology and imaging centers. Using HealtheConnections, patients’ electronic health information, such as histories, labs, reports and diagnostic tests from all of their participating healthcare providers is collected in one single, secure view online.

“This health information exchange will enhance healthcare for patients,” said Richard H. Ketcham, FACHE, President/CEO of St. Elizabeth Medical Center. “Providers will have access to important information immediately and be able to follow patient records, whether in the hospital or in a physician’s office.”

Patients must provide consent to each of their participating healthcare provider organizations for their medical information to be shared electronically by authorized physicians. If a patient has not yet signed a consent form but is involved in a life-threatening, emergency situation,

physicians are able to access HealtheConnections on a one-time emergency basis unless the patient has specifically declined consent. To opt out of HealtheConnections, patients need to specifically decline access to each of their healthcare providers.

“Participating in the RHIO is an important step in collaborative healthcare for our organizations and healthcare organizations in Central New York,” commented Scott H. Perra, FACHE, President/CEO, Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare. “The benefits to our patients are many including decreased need for duplicate tests and procedures, timely information for second opinions and the reduced risk of errors caused by illegible handwriting or incomplete records.”

The state and federal governments are promoting the creation of community-supported RHIOs in a movement toward national standards for the secure, electronic exchange of health information, and more efficient, cost-effective care. Health information exchanges have proven to reduce the cost of healthcare through the reduction of duplicate tests and procedures and by providing instant access to complete medical information. RHIOs across New York State are receiving positive responses and support, with very high levels of signed consent from patients.

Physician practices with electronic medical systems are also being connected to HealtheConnections. Over time, HealtheConnections will continue to connect physician practices, adding laboratories, radiology and imaging centers and long-term care facilities from communities across Central New York.

About HealtheConnections

HealtheConnections (pronounced “healthy-connections”) is the Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) of Central New York that is responsible for overseeing the secure, electronic health information exchange that gives authorized, participating medical providers access to complete patient medical histories and information in real time. HealtheConnections was launched in May 2010 and has currently connected 15 hospitals and one lab across 11 counties. Expansion will continue with regional hospitals, labs, diagnostic centers, and physician practices.

Area hospitals include Community General Hospital, Crouse Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center, SUNY Upstate Medical University Hospital, and Laboratory Alliance of Central New York, LLC, Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare, St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Oswego Health, Auburn Memorial Hospital, Cayuga Medical Center, Cortland Regional Medical Center, Carthage Area Hospital, E.J. Noble Hospital, Lewis County General Hospital, River Hospital and Samaritan Medical Center.

Documentary Focuses On St. Elizabeth Family Medicine Physician Assistant And Staff

A film crew from the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) spent Thursday, August 18 at the St. Elizabeth Family Medicine Center to film a documentary. The focus of the documentary was Kevin Mahoney, PA-C, who works at the Family Medicine Center on Hobart Street. Mr. Mahoney spent 31 years working in the New York Mental Health System and upon his retirement decided to begin a new career. He attended Albany Medical College in its Physician Assistant Program and became a member of the NHSC.

The NHSC is a network of primary healthcare professionals that work in underserved communities across the country and provides clinicians with financial support in the form of loan repayment and scholarships. Corps members must agree to work for certain periods of time; in return members receive payments toward their student loans.

“The St. Elizabeth Family Medicine Center is pleased to have Kevin on our team,” said Dr. William Jorgensen, Residency Program Director. “His dedication and commitment to his patients is an inspiration to co-workers.”

The St. Elizabeth Family Medicine Residency Program, which is housed at the Family Medicine Center, has grown quickly. It was established in 1975 with four residents who began seeing patients at the Medical Center. By 1979, the program had expanded to 12 physicians in training and moved to Foery Drive in South Utica. The program continued to grow and in 1987 added the Albert C. Redmond Family Health Center in Barneveld and the James Street Family Health Center in Utica, to patient treatment sites.

The Family Medicine Center moved to its current location at 120 Hobart Street in 1995 at the site of the historic Utica Free Academy High School building, tripling in size. The Family Medicine Center embodies the core mission of St. Elizabeth: providing care for the underserved.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mahoney’s career spanned diverse challenges, preparing him for work at St. Elizabeth. He began as the Business Officer and Rehabilitation Program Director at the Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center. During his last five years with the New York State, he was the Rehabilitation Program Director at the Central New York Psychiatric Center in Marcy. It was during those last five years that he and his team developed workshops on non-violence, substance abuse recovery, spirituality and conflict resolution at the maximum security hospital.

After the attack of September 11, he trained to become an Emergency Medical Technician. “In my second career, I wanted to do something that was hands-on, such as be a nurse,” said Mr. Mahoney. “A friend suggested looking into a career as a Physician Assistant.” On January 3, 2006, the day of his retirement, he started classes at Albany Medical College.

His prior community affiliations include: board member and trustee of Utica Catholic Charities, board member and past-president of the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees and co-founder and board member of the Sister Barbara Ginter Health Care Ministry. He was a fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives.

Mr. Mahoney and his wife, Kathy, reside in Utica. They are the parents of three adult children.

View a behind the scenes look at this documentary and see what else Dr. William Jorgensen hade to say about
Mr. Mahoney here.

St. Elizabeth Medical Center & Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare Receive Consumer Choice Award For Eighth Year In A Row

St. Elizabeth Medical Center (SEMC) and Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare (FSLH) and have been recognized as two of the nation’s top hospitals by National Research Corporation (NRC). Both earned the 2011/12 Consumer Choice Award for the eighth consecutive year.

Winners were announced in Modern Healthcare magazine in October. The award identifies hospitals in 300 markets throughout the United States. This is the sixteenth year NRC has conducted the research.

In a joint statement, Richard H. Ketcham, FACHE, president/CEO of SEMC, and Scott H. Perra, FACHE, president/CEO of FSLH, thanked patients and families for their confidence in the healthcare organizations.

"We are grateful for this recognition. It is our exceptional employees, volunteers and medical staff who help us meet the needs of our patients, their families and the community,” they said. “We are pleased that our hospitals have the commitment and resources to provide exceptional healthcare services for the patients that we serve.”

Several cooperative initiatives by the hospitals have helped raise the level of care for the region's communities. Those collaborations include the Mohawk Valley Heart Institute, the Regional Cancer Center and the Central New York Diabetes Education Program.

Winners of the award were determined through quality and image ratings by consumers in an annual healthcare market survey. Of the 3,200 hospitals named by consumers in the study, the winning facilities rank highest in their Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs), as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau. NRC surveyed more than 250,000 households representing 450,000 consumers in the contiguous 48 states and District of Columbia.

“Consumers are taking a more proactive role in their healthcare decisions and demanding higher quality,” said Susan L. Henricks, president/COO of NRC. “In a constantly changing healthcare industry, consumer perception is becoming more and more vital to the success of all hospitals. The Consumer Choice Award recognizes those facilities that are meeting or exceeding the needs of consumers – their patients.”

St. Elizabeth Medical Center celebrated its 145th anniversary Monday, December 12 by honoring an employee and a recipient of its community award.

Following a 12:30 p.m. Founder’s Day service in the Medical Center Chapel, The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter NYSARC received the Founder’s Day Community Service Award and Barb Zumpano received the Mother Bernardina Award, which is named after the Medical Center’s founder and is presented to an employee. The winner of this award is chosen by Medical Center employees.

St. Elizabeth Medical Center and Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare Explore Merger Opportunities

The Boards of Directors for both St. Elizabeth Medical Center and Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare have each recently passed a resolution to begin discussions on the feasibility and benefits of merging, or undertaking other transactions that would more closely link the two hospitals.

“The economic and regulatory environments continue to make it difficult for hospitals to survive. During the past several years, hospitals, particularly in New York State, have been struggling with the changes in reimbursement, unfunded mandates and an increasingly challenging regulatory environment. I applaud both boards for having the vision and commitment to explore a merger in order to sustain the healthcare needs of our community,” stated Gregory McLean, chairman of the Board of Directors for Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare. “Both institutions have strong commitments to the community and both recognize the need to be pro-active in this ever-changing healthcare arena.”

While officials are unsure of the specific timeline, they anticipate the process will take 18 to 24 months.

“As we look around New York State, a number of hospitals have already merged or are in the process of merging,” notes Norman I. Siegel, chairman of St. Elizabeth Medical Center Board of Trustees. “Consolidation and joint partnerships are not new for our area. Faxton Hospital and St. Luke’s Memorial consolidated their services in 2000. Both St. Elizabeth Medical Center and Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare jointly own the Mohawk Valley Heart Institute and have collaborative agreements for the Regional Cancer Program and the Central New York Diabetes Education Program. As we, the board members, look at the future, we feel it is responsible and prudent to explore the possibility of a combined system.”

The two organizations employ nearly 4,900 employees and have combined operating budgets of more than $535 million dollars.

“As community hospitals, we have done a good job working together to not duplicate services in a number of areas. That alone has saved our community millions of dollars in resources. As we look to the future and see the continued decrease in reimbursement and the additional burden placed on healthcare for regulatory reform, we recognize it is no longer business as usual,” commented Scott H. Perra, FACHE, president/CEO, Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare. “We will be exploring other models for the delivery of healthcare. While we are going through this process, we are very sensitive to what this announcement means to our healthcare family and our community. We recognize there will be concern among our employees, medical staff and members of our community. They will be anxious to know what this means regarding their jobs, where physicians practice and where patients receive care. Our pledge is to keep an open dialogue throughout this process.”

“Both the hospitals are busy, with more than 90,000 patient visits in our combined Emergency Departments and Urgent Care and caring for more than 29,000 inpatients annually. As we begin this process, we have no preconceived ideas about the final outcome or what the new system might look like. There are a number of excellent resources throughout New York State, systems who have merged, and we will be talking directly to a number of them in the coming months,” said Richard H. Ketcham, FACHE, president/CEO, St. Elizabeth Medical Center. “As we begin this journey, we have many avenues we need to explore, including working with the New York State Department of Health and our national, state and local government officials.”

“It is very important that the sponsor of our Medical Center, the Sisters of St. Francis, is fully involved as our discussions develop,” Mr. Ketcham stated. “I am pleased that they have already pledged their full support for our participation in this process.”

The Family Medicine Center will be renamed in honor of Sister Rose Vincent Gleason, OSF, former President/CEO of St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

“In order to recognize Sister Rose Vincent’s longstanding commitment to the underserved and to education, effective January 14, the Family Medicine Center, located at 120 Hobart Street, Utica, will be known as the Sister Rose Vincent Family Medicine Center,” announced Richard H. Ketcham, FACHE, President/CEO of St. Elizabeth Medical Center. “There were over 30,000 patient visits at the center last year.” Mr. Ketcham made this announcement at a Memorial Mass in honor of Sister Rose Vincent January 14.

During her tenure as President/CEO, Sister Rose Vincent had a major impact not only on St. Elizabeth Medical Center, but also on the healthcare community as a whole. Education was important to Sister and, as a result, the St. Elizabeth Family Residency Program was initiated.

“Sister Rose Vincent was one of the five most inspirational people in my life,” wrote Dr. Reynold Golden in a note sent to the Medical Center. He was the first director of the Family Medicine Residency Program from 1978 to 1992. This sentiment has been shared by many people that were touched by Sister Rose Vincent.

St. Elizabeth Medical Center now offers anterior total hip replacement. This alternative to traditional hip replacement surgery provides patients the potential for less pain, a faster recovery and improved mobility. Unlike traditional hip replacement surgery, this technique allows the surgeon to work between the muscles and tissues without detaching them from either the hip or thigh bone. The procedure is performed by Andrew Wickline, M.D.

Additional benefits to patients are: fewer restrictions during recovery, reduced scarring and stability of the implant sooner after surgery. Although every patient responds differently, the procedure helps many patients bend their hip and bear their full weight immediately, or soon after surgery. This is the only site in the Central New York region to offer this advanced technique.

St. Elizabeth Medical Center was also named a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield in March 2011 for demonstrating better overall quality of care and patient results in knee and hip replacement surgery. A large number of the orthopedic nursing staff has Certification in Orthopedic Nursing. Orthopedic pain-reduction techniques have also improved ambulation and recovery time.

Learn more about our orthopedic services here.

Note: Designation as Blue Distinction Centers means these facilities’ overall experience and aggregate data met objectives criteria established in collaboration with expert clinicians’ and leading professional organizations’ recommendations. Individual outcomes may vary. To find out which services are covered under your policy at any facilities, please call your local Blue Cross and/or Blue Shield Plan; and call your provider before making an appointment to verify the most current information on its Network participation and Blue Distinction status. Neither Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association nor any of its Licensees are responsible for any damages, losses, or non-covered charges that may result from using this resource or receiving care from a Blue Distinction provider.

St. Elizabeth Medical Center Is Running New Energy Efficient Co-Generation System

St. Elizabeth Medical Center is now running its co-generation unit. The Medical Center was awarded $2 million by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to design and install the co-generation system. The results are a yearly economic savings for the Medical Center while significantly cutting its energy use and providing additional secure backup for critical hospital operations.

“The system St. Elizabeth has installed is good for both patients and for the environment. It will also help control healthcare costs,” said Francis J. Murray, President and CEO of NYSERDA. “NYSERDA congratulated the hospital for its leadership and initiative. Their efforts will help reduce their energy use, and is an example of contributions that are necessary for New York to create a cleaner, more energy efficient, and sustainable energy future.”

“NYSERDA was pleased to provide $2 million as a result of a competitive selection process for this incredibly worthwhile and groundbreaking project, which demonstrates the Medical Center’s commitment and vision,” said Mr. Murray. “St. Elizabeth Medical Center is a shining example of what an organization can achieve when it adopts, as an organization policy, both energy efficiency and distributed generation as integral resources. Through hard work and a keen eye for opportunity, they have shown what is possible, and NYSERDA is proud to have partnered with them to assist in achieving their energy efficiency and reliability goals.”

St. Elizabeth Chief Operating Officer Robert Scholefield said, “The Medical Center’s staff appreciates NYSERDA’s support of this project, which will help us to conserve environmental resources while also utilizing financial resources to best provide services to people across our region.”

The highly efficient on-site co-generation system will allow St. Elizabeth each year to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 900 tons, reduce energy costs by $690,000, and provide revenues of $107,000 for energy the hospital will supply back to the power grid. The system, (called Combined Heat and Power (CHP) or co-generation), increases efficiency by capturing and using the waste heat in the day-to-day operations of the Hospital. The Hospital will not be affected during grid-power interruptions.

A sophisticated tracking system developed by Intelligent Energy Solutions (IES), the project developer, monitors both the hospital’s energy operations and energy pricing to allow St. Elizabeth to determine the economics of generating their own power vs. purchasing power through the electric grid and also when economics would dictate producing excess power and selling it back to the utility. Four years worth of hourly performance data will be collected by NYSERDA and shared with other entities to help them improve their energy planning.

For the last decade, NYSERDA has promoted the CHP process to help businesses and institutions generate cleaner and more efficient power and to develop trailblazing equipment, economically-important applications, and novel business models that can benefit a variety of users. Each NYSERDA R&D investment is selected to help sites acquire premium technology and create new learning opportunities for other energy users. Over the past 10 years, NYSERDA’s investments of more than $100 million for CHP have helped industrial, commercial and institutional facilities implement innovative approaches to cut their energy costs and decrease their energy use. During this time, NYSERDA has amassed the most comprehensive repository of publicly-available CHP performance data in the nation.

Trauma Center Celebrates 25th Anniversary Of Saving Lives

The St. Elizabeth Medical Center began its New York State Designated Area Trauma Center 25 years ago on Friday, March 9. The Trauma Center has been committed to saving the lives of victims of traumatic injury. During its 25 years of service, an average of 700 patients per year have been treated at the Trauma Center, translating to more than 17,500 patients. The Trauma Center’s risk-adjusted mortality rates are well below the New York State average.

For a trauma victim, the first hours after an injury are when an accident victim’s chances of survival are greatest, and is the time when any treatment for injury will be most effective. Prompt, effective medical care becomes a critical priority.

“Trauma is a team approach,” said Filomain Talerico, RN, MS, Trauma and Emergency Preparedness Coordinator at St. Elizabeth Medical Center. “It would not work without the cooperation of nearly every department in the hospital. Guidelines are in place enabling all the designated departments to carry out specific duties as soon as the Medical Center receives notification from Emergency Medical Services that a patient is en route.”

“St. Elizabeth Medical Center has developed a comprehensive trauma program that is the modeled after the American College of Surgeons, meets the New York State Standards for trauma centers, and provides care for all types of severe trauma and life-threatening injury,” said Dr. John DeTraglia, Medical Director of the Trauma Center. “It is staffed around the clock by appropriate, in-hospital specialists and on-call physicians.”

For the critically injured patient, time is crucial. When a trauma patient is located in the field, the hospital Emergency Department is put on alert. Paramedics and other pre-hospital personnel call in the patient’s condition and the hospital activates the Trauma Protocol, which assures the immediate availability of a trauma surgeon, anesthesiologist, radiologist, nurses, respiratory therapists and other personnel required for rapid resuscitation when the patient arrives. As specific injuries are identified, other specialists are called in to help treat the patient as part of the Trauma Team. These may include neurosurgeons, orthopedists, vascular surgeons and eye surgeons as well as many other medical providers. A well-coordinated trauma system can mean the difference between life and death, or between a permanent or temporary disability.

Injuries are the leading cause of death for New Yorkers ages 1 – 44 years and are among the top causes of death for all other age groups.

According to the New York State Department of Health, more than 7,250 New Yorkers die every year as a result of injury with recognized risk factors.

Injuries are consistently among the leading causes of hospitalization for New Yorkers of all age groups.

More than 145,000 individuals are injured severely enough to require hospitalization annually.

In addition to treating trauma patients in the hospital, the Trauma Center staff is also involved in community education to help reduce the number of trauma cases, with the “Think First” Program for high school students, a head and spinal cord injury prevention program and the “Fall Prevention Program” for senior citizens. A NYS Trauma Registry for tracking the quality care of the trauma patient is maintained. Trauma Nursing Education is provided locally to nurses throughout the community. Additionally the preparation for the facility for emergency preparedness is on going.

St. Elizabeth Medical Center also hosts an annual Trauma Symposium, a day-long educational event for healthcare providers. The 26th symposium will take place Friday, June 1 at the Radisson Hotel – Utica Centre. Learn more.

For additional information regarding the Trauma Center, contact: Ms. Filomain Talerico at 315-798-8127.

Sister Rose Vincent Family Medicine Center Holds Open House To Display New Digital Radiology Equipment

The Sister Rose Vincent Family Medicine Center held an open house March 8 to show its new, advanced digital mammography imaging equipment. This is the same model of equipment that was recently installed at St. Elizabeth Medical Arts in New Hartford.

The addition of the digital imaging equipment was made possible by the generosity of Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, the Mele Family Fund, a donor-advised fund of The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties and Dr. Martin Morell.

“It is through the support of these benefactors that St. Elizabeth Medical Center is able to enhance services provided by the Family Medicine Center,” said Richard Ketcham, President/CEO of St. Elizabeth Medical Center. “The benefits to patients who receive care at this location are varied. Patients can have many of the tests needed at the same appointment when they see healthcare providers. They don’t have to travel and they receive results before they leave the center.”

Excellus BlueCross BlueShield’s Community and Member Health Improvement Council grant will help improve access to life-saving mammography screenings for uninsured and underserved women in the community. “Mammography is the best tool for the early detection of breast cancer, yet studies show that the lower a woman’s income level, the less likely she is to receive regular screenings,” said Eve Van de Wal, regional president, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. “The availability of this new equipment, coupled with increased education and outreach efforts, will save lives.”

The Mele Family Fund, a donor-advised fund of The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, Inc., supports community projects that have the capacity to touch many lives and to enhance the impact on individual lives. “We, the Foundation and Mele Fund advisors Raymond Mele and Michael Valentine, are truly honored to partner with St. Elizabeth Medical Center in bringing the most up-to-date digital mammography equipment to the Sister Rose Vincent Family Medicine Center,” said Peggy O’Shea, President/CEO of The Community Foundation.

Martin Morell, M.D., owner of Arthritis Specialists, located at 4401 Middle Settlement Road, Suite 106, New Hartford, has donated a GE lunar prodigy bone density unit and a high-frequency Dell radiographic unit (x-ray machine) to the Sister Rose Vincent Family Medicine Center, located at 120 Hobart Street, Utica. This has allowed the Radiology Department at the Family Medicine Center to enhance services for patients. It is newer technology with a higher frequency generator and uses less radiation while improving image quality.

"Sister Rose Vincent believed in providing services to under privileged, uninsured residents of this community, I wanted to answer her call to assist these patients," said Dr. Morell.

The Department of Radiology has enhanced the equipment by adding an AGFA CR75 Computerized Radiology System, which converts plain film x-ray images to digital format to the radiographic unit. This technology eliminates the need for repeating images due to under- or over-exposure errors. The electronic imaging process improves the turnaround time of reports, physician access and quality from 24 hours to five hours or less. It has the same digital benefits as equipment at the Medical Center and Imaging at St. Elizabeth Medical Arts.

St. Elizabeth Medical Center Foundation Receives Grant From Stewart's Holiday Match

St. Elizabeth Medical Center has received a grant from the Stewart’s Holiday Match program in the amount of $1,250. Since 1986, Stewart’s has collected and matched donations from its shops from Thanksgiving until Christmas to benefit many worthwhile organizations throughout its service area. This is the fifth consecutive year the Medical Center was awarded a grant from Stewart’s Holiday Match.

The Medical Center will use the grant to purchase an incubator for the Pediatric Unit. Premature and ill newborn babies often have trouble maintaining an appropriate body temperature and need to be placed in incubators where the temperature of the air that surrounds them can be controlled and elevated as needed.

“St. Elizabeth Medical Center is grateful to Stewart’s Holiday Match program for its continued support, which benefits the children in our community,” said Richard H. Ketcham, President/CEO.

MVHI Holds Second Annual Heart Teaching Day

Keynote speaker Dr. Jose Di Diego discusses heart regeneration.

The Mohawk Valley Heart Institute’s (MVHI) second annual Heart Teaching Day, held on Saturday, March 24, 2012, featured keynote speaker Jose Di Diego, MD, the Program and Laboratory manager of the Experimental Cardiology Department at Masonic Medical Research Laboratory (MMRL). The teaching day was held at the Masonic Care Community in Utica, New York, and provided an educational opportunity for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses and healthcare professionals to learn about the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. More than 90 physicians and healthcare professionals were in attendance.

Dr. Di Diego’s keynote presentation discussed cardiac arrhythmias, stem cells and heart regeneration projects at MMRL. Di Diego actively participates as an experimental cardiac electrophysiologist in technologies that may one day regenerate the human heart. One of the most promising goals of the MMRL Stem Cell Center is the development of lab-grown hearts. This research has the potential to provide an alternative to heart transplantation and/or repairing of damaged hearts. Using cells from the recipient patient eliminates an auto-immune response or the need for drugs to repress this response.

Additional presentations given by MVHI providers, covered topics such as acute coronary syndrome, mitral valve regurgitation and sudden cardiac death.

Lymphedema Therapy Now At Adirondack Sports Medicine And Physical Therapy Center

Adirondack Sports Medicine & Physical Therapy Center of St. Elizabeth Medical Center has announced the addition of Lymphedema Therapy Services at Medical Arts, 4401 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford. Daniel Curri, PT, DPT, CLT, WWC has joined the staff and provides this service Tuesday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. New patients are being accepted by calling 315-798-8766.

Dr. Curri received his Bachelor’s and Doctorate in Physical Therapy Degrees from Utica College. He is an expert in evaluating and treating lymphedema and impaired skin integrity utilizing complete decongestive therapy and other research-based techniques. Dr. Curri is a certified lymphedema therapist through the Academy of Lymphatic Studies and is wound-care certified through the National Alliance of Wound Care.

Lymphedema is a condition that causes swelling in one or more of the upper or lower extremities. It is the result of impaired flow of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a network of vessels throughout the body that collects excess lymph fluid, which is filtered and eventually returned to the bloodstream. When the lymph vessels become blocked, it results in localized swelling, called lymphedema.

St. Elizabeth Medical Center Honors volunteers - 48 Serve 159,200 Hours

St. Elizabeth Medical Center has named Peggy Goldstein of New Hartford Volunteer of the Year. Mary Margaret Napoli of Utica has received the St. Elizabeth Guild’s Eleanor Nelson Award, named for an active, former Guild member who passed away many years ago.

The two top volunteers were announced at the Medical Center’s annual Volunteer Breakfast on Friday, April 20, where special recognition pins were awarded to 48 people who have each logged from 100 to 38,000 hours of volunteer service. Those 48 volunteers have volunteered a cumulative total of 159,200 hours. Sandra Fentiman, Manager of Marketing and Public Relations, was the guest speaker. The event’s theme was “Exceptional People, Extraordinary Hearts.”

“We cannot thank our volunteers enough for all that they do to support the Medical Center’s mission to provide excellence in healthcare and education,” said Richard H. Ketcham, FACHE, President/CEO. “The volunteers provide an incredible benefit to the Medical Center, the staff, patients and their families.”

Peggy Goldstein has been a volunteer for eleven years and has accumulated over 4,400 hours of service to the Medical Center. Mrs. Goldstein primarily volunteers in the Medical Group Office, but through the years has volunteered in Central Admitting, Marketing and Public Relations, The Advantage Program, Grants and Special Projects and the Volunteer office.

She was raised in Ithaca until the age of 13, when her family relocated to New York City. She attended Rockwood Park High, a private school in Boston. She and her husband, Ira, were married in 1962. He passed away in 1980 after 18 years of marriage. They had a son and a daughter they raised while working on a farm. She later attended Utica College and worked as a nurses’ assistant for 12 years. Mrs. Goldstein also volunteers for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Mary Margaret Napoli has been a member of the Guild of St. Elizabeth Medical Center since 2004 and has accumulated over 3,800 hours. She began volunteering at the Medical Center as part of the Advantage Program in 2003. Mrs. Napoli has volunteered in the former sewing room, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory waiting room and Ambulatory Surgery waiting room.

She has helped with Guild Fashion Shows, Christmas Bazaars, and has chaired clothing sales, bake sales, and the annual Guild Christmas luncheon. She participates on many Guild Committees and has been recording secretary, assistant corresponding secretary and currently serves as Guild Vice President.

Mrs. Napoli is a graduate of T. R. Proctor High School. She is a lifelong resident of South Utica. During her career, she was a long-time employee of P.C.
